Common use
Avandia is an oral hypoglycemic agent belonging to the group of thiazolidinediones. It is a selective agonist of nuclear receptor PPARγ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma). Avandia lowers blood glucose by increasing insulin sensitivity of fat and liver tissues, skeletal muscles and improves metabolic processes, reduces blood levels of glucose, insulin and free fatty acids. Avandia is used to treat people with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. It may be used alone or in combination with metformin (Glucophage) or sulfonylureas as well as insulin.

Dosage and direction
Daily doses range from 4 to 8 mg and should be taken once or twice daily with or without food.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have heart failure or heart disease, heart attack or stroke in history, liver disease, diabetes-related eye problems before to take this medication. Know signs of hypoglycemia and keep a source of sugar at hand. These sings are: hunger, headache, drowsiness, weakness, confusion, irritability, sweating, fast heartbeat, dizziness, tremors, seizure. If your sugar level is too high you may feel very thirsty or hungry. You may also urinate more than usual. Take this medication exactly as prescribed as it is a part of a complicated program consisting of diet, medication, and exercise routines. Women are more likely then men to have fractures due to Avandia. Avandia may stimulate month periods in women even after a long interruption.

Contraindication
Avandia is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes, or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis. Carefulness should be exercised in patients with congestive heart failure or heart disease, heart attack or stroke in history, liver disease, diabetes-related eye problems.

Possible side effect
The following side effects are notified in patients using this drug: upper respiratory tract infection, headache, back pain, hyperglycemia, fatigue, sinusitis, diarrhea, and hypoglycemia, edema, heart failure, anemia.

Drug interaction
These medications are known to interfere with Avandia: isoniazid, diuretics, steroids, phenothiazines, thyroid medicine, birth control pills and other hormones, seizure medicines, diet pills, medicines to treat asthma, colds or allergies, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, sulfa drug, beta-blockers. Inform your doctor about all medications you take including food supplements and herbal products.

Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember about it. If it is almost time of your next dose just skip it and return to your regular schedule.

Overdose
Immediate medical attention in needed in case you too too much of the medicine. Possible side effects include: hunger, drowsiness, headache, confusion, irritability, tremors, weakness, dizziness, sweating, fast heartbeat, seizure, fainting, or coma.

Storage
Store Avandia at room temperature between 15-30 C (59-86 F) in a tight container away from sunlight, moisture, children and pets.
