Common use
Brethine belongs to the class of beta adrenergic receptor agonists, and works as a bronchodilator, that is relaxes muscles around bronchioles and expands the air passages. The medication is used to treat symptoms associated with asthma, emphysema or bronchitis such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath which appear due to bronchospasm, swelling of linings in bronchi, or accumulation of fluid in them.
Dosage and direction
Take 2.5-5 mg of Brethine three times a day. First intake of the medication starts six hours after awaking. Maximal oral dose is 15 mg a day. Do not exceed the indicated dosage. Consult your doctor about proper dose schedule for you.
Precautions
Inform your doctor before to start Brethine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have problems with the heart such as an irregular heartbeat, hypertension, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, seizures or an adrenal gland tumor in history. Notify your doctor about all prescription or nonprescription medications you are currently taking.
Contraindications
Do not use Brethine if you are allergic to its components.
Possible side effect
The most frequent side effects are nervousness, tremor, nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fast heart rate, and hypertension. More rare but serious side effects may occur: vomiting, nausea, restlessness, anxiety, lethargy, chest pain, excessive sweating, muscle cramping. Brethine may cause high blood glucose and low blood potassium. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice severe allergy symptoms (itching, hives, facial swelling).
Drug interaction
Brethine is known to interact with Catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors (entacapone), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline), MAO inhibitors (phenelzine), droxidopa. Co-administration with them may cause life-threatening irregular heartbeat. Risk of diuretics side effects increases in patients on Brethine. Effectiveness of Brethine or insulin is decreased by beta-blockers (nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), and metoprolol (Lopressor)).
Missed dose
If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not increase your recommended doses. Take your usually dose next day in the same regularly time.
Overdose
Symptoms of Brethine overdose are dizziness, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, nausea, nervousness, headache, vomiting. Call your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 20-25 C (68-77 F).
