Common use
Mevacor is a cholesterol-lowering medication which used along with diet, to lower cholesterol levels in people with primary hypercholesterolemia (too much cholesterol in the bloodstream). It works by that blocking the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the body.This medicine may also be used to prevent certain types of heart problems in patients with risk factors for heart problems .
Dosage and direction
Consult with your doctor before using. Use no more than was prescribed.
Commonly dosage for adults is one tablet containing 500 milligrams of extended-release niacin and 20 milligrams is 20 milligrams once a day, taken with the evening meal. Take each dose with a full glass of water/milk. Do not crush or chew the tablets, swallow them all. The maximum recommended dosage is 80 milligrams per day, taken as a single dose or divided into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor. Commonly dosage for children 10 to 17 years old is 10 to 40 10-40 mg taken once or twice daily. Girls must have been menstruant for at least 12 months before starting therapy with Mevacor.

Precautions
Mevacor should be prescribed and used by young girls only after they have had their menstrual periods for at least one year before starting this medication. Use Mevacor with caution in children under 10 years old or in doses greater than 40 milligrams a day. During the treatment with Mevacor you may to limit the amount of grapefruit or grapefruit juice you may eat or drink (less than 1 quart a day) , because grapefruit juice may increase the amount of certain drugs in your bloodstream. Patients who drink large amounts of alcohol should be closely monitored by their doctor while they are taking Mevacor.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in the presence of allergy to Mevacor, fungal byproducts, pregnancy. Mevacor is not allowed in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases. Pregnancy and Lactation.
Possible side effect
They may include all types of an allergic reaction.Also the most possible side effects include:
muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness with fever or flu symptoms and dark colored urine.
Less serious include:
mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset, heartburn;
nausea;
constipation; or
diarrhea.
If you experience one of them stop using Mevacor and tell your doctor as soon as possible. Also consult with your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual.
Drug interaction
Mevacor interact with the followin medications: bile acid sequestrant; fenofibrate; gemfibrozil; lisinopril; niacin; warfarin.
Also note that interaction between two medications does not always mean that you
must stop taking one of them. As usual it affects the the effect of drugs, so consult with your doctor about how it interactions are being managed or should be managed.
Missed dose
If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose. Take your usually dose next day in the same regularly time.

Mevacor overdose isn't danger for your life. Symptoms of Mevacor overdose may include:
Diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, heartbeat irregularities, indigestion, nausea, severe flushing, vomiting.
