Common use
Monopril is used to treat high blood pressure alone or with other medicines.It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by relaxing blood vessels. This helps to lower blood pressure. Monopril is used to along with other medicines to manage heart failure.
Dosage and directions
Take Monopril by mouth with or without food. Do not take an antacid that has aluminum, magnesium, or simethicone in it within 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take Monopril. Continue to use Monopril even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
Precautions
Before using Monopril discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning become pregnant or breast-feeding, if you have allergy to food, medicines, or other substances, if you are taking any prescribed or not prescribed medications, herbal products, or dietary supplements, you have a history of heart problems (heart failure, aortic stenosis), blood vessel problems, blood flow problems, bone marrow problems, kidney or liver problems, or diabetes, history of stroke, recent heart attack, or kidney transplant, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, or are on a low-salt (sodium) diet, autoimmune disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma), you are dehydrated or have low blood volume, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, or are on a low-salt (sodium) diet, you are receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee or wasp stings, you are having dialysis or apheresis, or are scheduled to have major surgery.
Contraindications
Do not use Monopril if you have allergy to its components or to other ACE inhibitors; you are in your second or third trimester of pregnancy; you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or unusual hoarseness), including angioedema caused by treatment with an ACE inhibitor.
Possible side effects
The common side effect are nausea, cough, dizziness. Seek medical help if you experience one of the following severe side effects: allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the hands, eyes, mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); chest pain; confusion; dark urine; decreased urination; difficulty swallowing; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; mental or mood changes; muscle pain or cramping; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; slurred speech; stomach pain (with or without nausea or vomiting); symptoms of infection (eg, fever, chills, persistent sore throat); symptoms of low blood pressure (eg, fainting, severe dizziness, lightheadedness); vision changes; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor if you are taking any drugs especially about the following: angiotensin receptor blockers (eg, losartan) or trimethoprim, aldosterone blockers (eg, eplerenone), potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone, triamterene), or potassium supplements, insulin, sulfonylureas (glipizide), or other oral diabetes medicines (eg, metformin), gold-containing medicines (auranofin), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (ibuprofen, indomethacin), lithium.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Monopril, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms are fainting; severe dizziness or lightheadedness; weakness. Seek medical attention if you think that you overdosed Monopril.
Storage
Store Monopril at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Monopril out of the reach of children and away from pets.
